Understanding The Difference Between Gazebos, Pergolas, and Pavilions

When enhancing your outdoor living space, choosing the right type of outdoor structure is key. Gazebos, pergolas, and pavilions, while very similar, offer distinct features and functionalities suited to different landscaping needs.

Gazebos: Traditionally octagonal in shape, gazebos are standalone structures often placed in garden settings. They feature a solid roof and partially open sides, providing shelter while maintaining a connection with the surrounding landscape. Gazebos are ideal for creating a secluded retreat in your garden, offering a shaded spot for relaxation or an intimate space for outdoor dining.

Pergolas: Pergolas are outdoor structures characterized by their open lattice or cross-beam roofs and usually supported on columns or posts. They are perfect for defining spaces like dining areas or outdoor lounges. Pergolas provide partial shade, making them ideal for areas where you want to enjoy both sun and shade. They can also support climbing plants, adding a natural, green touch to your outdoor area.

Pavilions: Similar to gazebos, pavilions are larger and typically rectangular or square. They provide full coverage with a solid roof and are often used as an extension of the home. Pavilions are great for larger gatherings, offering sheltered outdoor space for entertainment, dining, or relaxation. They can be placed near a pool, in a spacious garden, or as a centerpiece in your backyard.

In an outdoor living space, the choice between a gazebo, pergola, and pavilion often depends on the intended use, available space, budget, and personal preferences. Gazebos offer a charming escape in a garden setting, pergolas integrate seamlessly with your landscaping for a stylish outdoor living area, and pavilions serve as a versatile space for larger gatherings and family activities.

How Much Do Gazebos Or Pergolas Cost?

An outdoor structure like a pergola, gazebo, or pavilion is a great way to complete your new outdoor living space

Smaller Structures

$2,500 - $4,000

This would be for a small wood pergola type structure on your back deck, across a pathway, or in your garden.

Medium Spaces

$4,000 - $8,000

This would be for a larger pergola or gazebo type structure on your back deck or patio, or in your garden area.

Large Spaces

$8,000 - $20,000+

This would be for a larger pavilion type structure on your back deck, next to your pool, or to cover an outdoor dining area.

Choosing Between Pre-Made Kits and Custom-Built Options for Your Outdoor Structures

When deciding on an outdoor structure like a gazebo, pergola, or pavilion, you have two primary options: purchase a pre-made kit or get a custom-built design. Both choices offer unique benefits, but it's essential to consider the complexities of actually installing an outdoor structure before proceeding.

Pre-Made Kits: These kits come with all the necessary components and instructions for assembly. They offer convenience and a quicker installation process, with designs varying from basic to more intricate styles. However, it's important to note that even with pre-made kits, the installation can be challenging, requiring specific tools and a certain level of expertise to ensure structural integrity and safety.

Custom-Built Options: Custom-built structures are tailored to your specific preferences and the unique characteristics of your landscape. They provide the flexibility to choose materials, sizes, and designs that perfectly match your outdoor space and personal style. Custom outdoor structures can be more complex and require skilled craftsmanship, making them a task best left to a team of professional landscapers.

While DIY installation might seem appealing, it's important to consider the potential challenges and risks. Working with a professional landscaping company like Thunderstruck Restorations ensures that whether you choose a pre-made kit or a custom-built structure, it will be constructed safely and correctly.

Our team has the expertise to handle any complexities, ensuring your outdoor structure is not only beautiful but also durable and structurally sound.

Let us take the burden off your shoulders and provide you with a hassle-free installation, enhancing your outdoor living experience with the perfect gazebo, pergola, or pavilion.

This spring we had the pleasure of contracting out a deck with Kyle and his team at Thunderstruck Restorations. It all started out when an 80ft oak fell in our back yard right onto our deck. After contacting our insurance company, I called and made an appointment for an estimate, which was completed within days of calling. When I asked Kyle to be present for the insurance appraiser he agreed without question and spoke on our behalf, considering we were unfamiliar with deck construction and general building regulations. After completing our insurance claim, the team worked with us on pricing and design that best suited our needs, and was very understanding with our several design changes at the beginning of the process. (We were able to size up and go with aluminum spindles!) They took care of all the paperwork with the city and made everything as timely as possible with their already busy schedule. The only hiccup we ran into was when the city blue prints showed our septic tank in the wrong spot forcing us to shift the numbers of footing and install a larger beam for support. Through all of this, the team was communicative with the delays, processes, and very reasonable with the pricing adjustment. Once all the building supplies were in order, the deck went up so quickly - working around the random Minnesota weather, it really only took about a week. My wife and I couldn’t be happier with the service we received and were more impressed with the communication and the transparency during the process. We never felt out of the loop, and everything was always thoroughly explained to whichever one of us was home at the time. And of course we have to mention the craftsmanship of the deck: it’s exactly what we wanted, but better; the attention to detail and care making sure everything was straight, lined up, etc - it’s seriously perfect. They had to replace a couple pieces of siding underneath where the old deck had ruined some, and the pieces are blended in so well. Honestly, the deck feels too nice for this 40 year old house. We’ll definitely be calling Thunderstruck again for any future projects.

Kyle and his team were absolutely wonderful to work with. From the initial estimate, working through a couple issues on the previously installed footings and the completion of the deck, the process was great. My wife and I were very pleased and it was a good price!

Kyle and his team did a great job designing and building our deck expansion project. This project included building to code to support an elevated hot tub. We are very happy with the final product and definitely recommend them.

We hired ThunderStruck to tear down a deck, replace the footings (helical) and build a new Maintenance free deck with aluminum railing. Communications were very prompt with an initial bid within days. I believe the pricing was fair. Most importantly, the deck was built beautifully and with quality standards. I would definitely hire ThunderStruck again!
